Today, we're looking at some common household items that we often overlook while composting.
1. Coffee grounds
There are a lot of misconceptions that coffee grounds make the soil acidic. This myth comes from the fact the fresh coffee grounds are acidic, however, used coffee grounds are neutral. You can incorporate coffee grounds in your compost pile as a source of Nitrogen.
While other dairy and meat products are off-limits for backyard composting as they attract wildlife, eggshells are a perfect source of calcium for your apples, broccoli, carrots, cherries, peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes. Just incorporate crushed eggshells around those plants.
Most non-glossy newspapers use soy-based inks and are perfectly fine for composting. However, if the newspapers are able to be recycled, it's better to recycle them.
4. Pizza boxes
Greasy pizza boxes are a perfect source of Carbon for your backyard/vermi-composting. Just make sure there is no food inside to avoid wildlife.
5. Grass clippings
Pesticide-free grass clippings are a great source of Nitrogen for your garden. The best way to compost grass clippings is to leave them on the lawn after mowing and they will provide nutrients to grass without applying any artificial fertilizers.
